Poniard Pharmaceuticals Inc., formerly known as NeoRX, is a specialty pharmaceutical company based in the San Francisco area, that is focused on the discovery, development, and commercialization of oncology products. The company’s lead product candidate, Picoplatin is designed to overcome platinum resistance associated with the treatment of solid tumors. Picoplatin is in Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of small cell lung, and is in Phase I/II for colorectal and hormone-refractory prostate cancers. Poniard Pharmaceuticals also involves in the development and discovery of novel, small-molecule, multi targeted protein kinase inhibitors. The company was founded in 1984, as NeoRX, but only recently changed its name to Poniard Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in June 2006.
The company is presently focusing their development efforts on picoplatin, a new generation platinum therapy that provides a differentiated spectrum of activity and an improved safety profile. An intravenous chemotherapeutic agent known as picoplatin has been designed to overcome platinum resistance associated with the treatment of solid tumors. Poniard is also studying picoplatin in Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials for possible indications as a treatment of small cell lung, colorectal and hormone-refractory prostate cancers.
The company has a clear business strategy which revolves around the formation of strategic partnerships that will allow them to support and expand in-house clinical programs and realize some of their commercial opportunities. Poniard is also very interested in building up a diverse portfolio of oncology product candidates. As part of this strategy, the company is already collaborating with the Scripps Florida Research Institute as part of a program to discover novel, small-molecule, multi-targeted protein kinase inhibitors for use as therapeutic agents in the treatment of cancer.

Picoplatin - is a cytotoxic platinum compound currently in clinical development for the treatment of solid tumors. The candidate induces apoptosis by binding to DNA and interfering with DNA replication and transcription. It represents a new generation of platinum therapy solutions that Picoplatin is designed to overcome the common platinum resistance associated with the treatment of solid tumors.
