Company Overview: |
| Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company that is involved in the research and development of small molecule drugs with therapeutic applications for metabolic, central nervous system, cardiovascular, and inflammatory diseases. Arena is focused on discovering, developing and commercializing innovative oral drugs to benefit patients with serious diseases and disorders. The company is developing a pipeline of compounds targeting a class of drug targets called G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). |
Products and Services: |
By using their proprietary GPCR technologies, Arena is given the research and discovery capability to find drugs that target both well-understood receptors with known function and promising novel GPCRs where the function is not yet understood. This is largely responsible for the company’s broad pipeline of product candidates and a strong research program to continue building future pipeline product candidates.
Arena accomplished much of this development by using the two main component technologies that make up GPCR:
* Constitutively Activated Receptor Technology (CART) allows researcher to stimulate GPCRs and screen drug candidates without knowing the receptor’s natural ligand. This aids the acceleration of the discovery process for novel drug candidates and target receptors that would otherwise be difficult to target for developmental purposes.
* Melanophore - is a high-throughput screen to test for compounds that interact with the receptor and which makes use of frog skin cells in order to signal when GPCRs couple with their G protein or proteins. The technology is sensitive enough to detect a wide range of receptor activity.
Arena Pharmaceuticals has four internally discovered, clinical-stage drug candidates that may be offer treatment options for many serious diseases.
Lorcaserin hydrochloride - This is Arena Pharmaceutical’s most advanced drug candidate. It is an investigative oral treatment for obesity. Lorcaserin selectively stimulates the 5-HT2C serotonin receptor that can be found in the part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which helps regulate satiety and influences the body’s metabolic rate.
APD125 - Arena’s lead drug candidate for insomnia is an orally active compound that contains an active ingredient or chemical mechanism that most of the leading drugs of similar type that are currently on the market. Most of Arena’s early research point to the fact that this particular bio-mechanism may even more effective at maintaining sleep while lacking some of the common side effects associated with such medication like lethargy and a sense of dullness in thinking upon waking.
APD791 - It is an oral anti-thrombotic drug candidate currently under clinical development that intended to lower the risk of arterial thrombosis by reducing the amplification of platelet aggregation, arterial constriction and intimal hyperplasia mediated by serotonin.
APD668 - APD668 is the lead drug candidate being developed in a partnership between Arena and Ortho-McNeil, Inc. that was initiated to develop compounds for the potential treatment of type 2 diabetes and other disorders.
