| Affymetrix' GeneChip® technology, the world’s first microarray, was invented in the late 1980's by a team of scientists lead by Stephen P.A. Fodor, Ph.D. This technology became the basis of a new company, Affymetrix, formed as a division of Affymax, N.V. in 1991. Affymetrix began operating independently in 1992, which was followed by the first commercial sale of microarray in 1994. Since then Affymetrix’s technology has gone on to be used in a number of top biotechnology, pharmaceutical and biological research companies. Indeed its technology is recognised as the gold standard for analyzing complex genetic information. |
Affmetrix is involved in the production of microarrays, reagents and assays, and biological research instruments which harness the Genechip technology. Affymetrix also develops a suite of software solutions, which can used to establish biological relevance to data through data analysis, mining, and management solutions.
Affymetrix provides an online resource through it’s NetAffx™ Analysis Center which enables researchers to correlate their GeneChip® array results with array design and annotation information.
